Whats A Learning Pod Anyway?

Will My Kid Benefit From Being In One?

By Melissa Shrader Editor/Publisher Fort Collins Macaroni Kid August 30, 2020

This year many parents are unsure of the amount of learning kids are going to get out of remotely and by homeschooling for those who are new to homeschooling.

Many parents are turning to PODS. What's a POD? I've been hearing some different ways parents are using PODs.  Primarily they are a small group of parents who gather their kids together to learn a specific program as a small group supporting each other. Kids gather together to learn district online classes or a certain Homeschool curriculum with parents helping to share responsibility of support in learning.

DISTRICT ONLINE LEARNING:

POD's are a whole new realm for Public school parents. Parents are gathering their kids together in small groups called POD's. They are like study groups and having them study together daily o weekly. This is a great way for the kids to learn and it helps working parents with the work load too. There are some great resources to connect families together to create their own POD.

HOMESCHOOL:

Homeschool families have been using learning pods for quite some time. Not every homeschool family does this but many do. Pod learning is when several homeschooling families join together and use resources like tutors to supplement learning. Many parents share the teaching instead of hiring a tutor. For homeschooling parents, family designated by the parents are the primary teachers with tutoring and other sources making up less than half of the total learning plan.

Co-ops are another alternative for homeschooling. A co-op is a collaborative of local homeschooling families. They might go on field trips together, have class schedules with the instructors being parents in the co-op, and can be an important part of the social component of homeschooling.

WILL MY CHILD BENEFIT FROM BEING IN A POD?

Well this is new to the online learning model however many homeschool students love PODs and CO-OPs. It's truly up to you and how your child learns. No matter if you're doing Online distance learning or homeschooling this year, anytime kids and parents support each other it's  a great thing!

What will your family be deciding on this year?
