"History and Culture

Lesher, an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, opened in 1960 and is named for  former PSD superintendent David B. Lesher. More recently it was recognized as a 2014 Green Ribbon School by the US Dept. of Education, 2014 School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, 2013 No Place for Hate by the Anti-Defamation League, and a 2012 Breakthrough School by MetLife/NASSP. As a diverse downtown middle school, the school climate and culture is The Lesher Difference and a point of pride.


Academics and Activities

In addition to the IB Middle Years Program, Lesher’s signature academic programs are its gifted and talented program, transitional bilingual program, and emphasis on service. Co-curricular activities include essay competitions, knowledge bowls, math contests, Gifted and Talented Summer Institute, Geography and Spelling Bees, Night at the Museum, Inquiry Night, Career Fair, Bike Week, and Poetry Night. Lesher students can participate in 14 interscholastic sports and 12 or more club activities, such as, KLIB news, Lego Robotics, Science Olympiad, Chess, Math Counts, National Junior Honor Society, chamber music groups, jazz band, WEB (Where Everybody Belongs), Yearbook, Technology Student Association, and IMPACTS (sustainability). Lesher also generates Inside, Outside, Upside, Down, the only middle school student produced literary magazine in PSD and supports annual trips to the American southwest, Catalina Island, Europe, and Spanish speaking countries.
