Publisher's Note: Experimenting with Mood & Essential Oils

Essential Oil Room Fresheners.

By Melissa Shrader Editor Publisher Fort Collins Macaroni KID January 9, 2023

Welcome

My daughter loves fragrance and we decided to make couple DIY room fresheners ourselves. We love having a few different scents to help uplift our mood, calm us down, make the house smell fresh and welcoming, help us relax before bedtime, and on occasion to transform our home into a spa.

We made a spray bottle full of a wonderful freshener which, I have to say, is pretty good at covering up scents.

I love this recipe. It's inexpensive, easy to make and it can be customized to fit what you need or want.

Easy Customizable Air Freshener

Ingredients:

2 Cups Water
20-30 Drops Essential Oil
2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
Spray Bottle

How to create your air freshener:
Put about 25 drops of your favorite essential oil to 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Stir to combine. Lemon and lavender are great choices. Try eucalyptus, or Sweet Orange, these are my favorites because of the refreshing scent. Pour the baking soda and essential oil mix into the water and stir. Then funnel the water into your spray bottle. Seal tightly and give the bottle a good shake to fully combine ingredients.

We made a couple other fragrances too from different recipes.

I created these recipes for a stronger scent, and a lighter spray that last longer.

Fun Recipes For Your Home

Pick one of the recipes then read below how to put it together.

Cleansing Deodorizing Spray
If you have indoor pets, you’ll appreciate the air-cleansing properties of this simple spray!
3/4 cup water

4 drops tea tree essential oil
8 drops lemon essential oil
6 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Walking in the Woods Air Freshener Spray
A woodsy blend that is steadying and grounding for those chaotic days.

Keep Focused Spray
This is my go-to blend when I’m working in my office or we’re doing homeschool and need help staying on task.
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
7 drops white fir essential oil
6 drops cedar wood essential oil
5 drops frankincense essential oil

Citrus Mint Spray
You can’t beat the combination of citrus and mint to give your home a crisp, invigorating feel.
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
10 drops wild orange essential oil
8 drops peppermint essential oil

Calming Sweet Lavender Spray
This gentle, calming spray is perfect for spritzing in the bedrooms before you tuck your kids in for the night.
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons real vanilla extract
10 drops lavender essential oil
5 drops chamomile essential oil

Putting it all together:

Gather what you need for the spray. Pick a recipe above and use as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to mix-and-match essential oils depending on what you have and what you want to achieve.
Literally put it together. Combine ingredients. You can add them right into your sprayer (with a funnel to decrease spills) to keep things easy.
Shake well and spray! Since the essential oils tend to float on top of the water, always shake your sprayer bottle before spraying in your home. Natural homemade air freshener sprays won’t linger in your home as long as commercial chemical-sprays, but I personally don’t mind spraying a bit more often if it means I’m avoiding the toxins.

Make a spray or 2 or 6 and let me know if you liked the recipes.
