By Melissa Shrader Editor/Publisher Fort Collins Macaroni Kid April 27, 2021

WELCOME TO PUBLISHER'S CORNER!

This, it's all about this. Kindness. It's simple. We need to treat each other with kindness. The definition of Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

There are a bunch of ways to show kindness too. The Kindness Rocks project is one we've taken part in and LOVE.

Kindness.org is a wonderful site with so many ideas. They have a learn-kind curriculum and have partnered with Harvard to develop ideas to show kindness during the pandemic to hit the areas that are most important to people.

Random Acts of Kindness are all around us and at Randomactsofkindness.org you can find so many ways to spread kindness to everyone around you it's amazing.  #MakeKindnessTheNorm Try this Random Act of Kindness Challenge.  Find out about their curriculum for kids K-8 and a special High school elective course The Kindness Impact.

What would happen if you committed to performing at least one act of kindness every day?

Tips for Teaching Kindness

Be kind to yourself.  - This one is harder than it sounds. We as parents tend to put ourselves second or last. It's in our nature to do that and it's also in our nature to learn by watching others. So if your kids see you put yourself last all the time they pick up on that.  Being kind to yourself is key in teaching them to be kind to themselves.
Practice. Show by example.
Be intentional about it.  You can do many things, volunteer, give compliments, donate to a charity, hold the door for someone, for example.
Be Courteous Say thank you.
How do you learn right and wrong? Through associative learning. Seeing someone being kind or noticing it from a family member or friend. Be curious, reinforce the act of kindness, make sure to tell them you appreciate what they did. Positive reinforcement helps people want to do more good deeds and reminds people to act with intention.
