7 Tips on How to Survive Separation Anxiety

Getting some time away on a date night or for some errands can be much harder when your child has separation anxiety. Below are some tips for how to prepare your kiddos for a babysitter’s arrival.

TIP 1: Show them the sitter’s picture if available. Talk about her and how fun she will be!

TIP 2: Ask them what they love the most about having a babysitter. Provide ideas if necessary like fun games, time outside, playing, etc.

TIP 3: Talk about what will happen when the babysitter arrives and how you will leave. Be specific and follow it to a tee! Keep it short and sweet!

TIP 4: Remind your child that if they get sad while you are away they can look at pictures or write you a note. Another idea is to leave them kisses in their hands that they store in their pockets for later.

TIP 5: Stay positive! Make sure to smile, talk about how much fun they will have and how great it will be to hear about their time when you return.

TIP 6: The more you practice the easier it gets. Being consistent and predictable helps your child with cues on what will come next which diminishes the anxiety.

TIP 7: Keep your promise on when you will return. If you return to “check-in” it will only extend the anxiety.
